About this place
Shiotatsu is a group of townhouses in Shiotamachi, Ureshino, Saga Prefecture. In 2005 it was selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings (Judenken district). It flourished as a post town on the Nagasaki Kaido (Shiota-juku) and a river port on the Shiota River (Shiotatsu). Rows of white-plastered townhouses, "igurayas" (igura-zukuri), line the eaves and form a distinctive landscape. Besides the igurayas, the Edo-period town and lot divisions and waterways that remain were factors in its selection as a Judenken district.
