Overview
Tatsuno built this vermilion gate at home; eight zodiac animals are carved in its ceiling - the missing four turned up in Tokyo Station.
About this place
Takeo Onsen is a hot spring town in Takeo, Saga Prefecture (formerly Hizen Province). Lotion made with the hot spring water is also produced. The Takeo Onsen Romon gate, together with the New Building, is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan and is the symbol of the hot spring town. Both are by Tatsuno Kingo, and a celebration of completion was held on April 12, 1914 (Taisho 3). Past the gate are the Takeo Onsen New Building, a museum, and the public bath and private baths described below. The New Building was a public bath until 1973 (Showa 48).
