About this place
Kiunkaku is a modern building in Showacho, Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is an Atami City Designated Tangible Cultural Property. It was built in 1919 (Taisho 8) by the businessman and politician Uchida Shinya as a villa for his biological mother to rest. In 1925 (Taisho 14), the businessman Nezu Kaichiro acquired the land and building from Uchida and made it the Nezu Villa, adding a Western-style house. Together with the Iwasaki Villa and the Sumitomo Villa, it was praised as one of the "Three Great Villas of Atami." In 1947 (Showa 22), Sakurai Hyogoro, who ran a hotel in Kanazawa, acquired it, named it "Kiunkaku" and opened it as an inn.
