About this place
Itaibara Settlement is a mountain village settlement in Chizu, Yazu District, Tottori Prefecture. A prefecturally selected Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The settlement, nestled among surrounding mountains such as Ushibushiyama and Kaijoyama, retains a legend of being a hidden village of Taira clan fugitives. It is a settlement located at an elevation of about 430 meters in a valley of the Itaibara River (Akanami River) in the Sendai River system, in the mountains behind Ushibushiyama at Chizu-juku on the Chizu Orai road; it prospered on farming and charcoal burning in the Edo period and sericulture in the Meiji period.
