Overview
Glazed Sekishu tiles resist snow and salt, and their red is what gives this coast's towns their colour.
About this place
Sekishu kawara is clay roof tile produced in the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture. It is one of the Three Great Kawara of Japan, along with Sanshu kawara and Awaji kawara. It uses as raw material the clay of the "Tsunozu Formation," whose type locality is Tsunozucho, Gotsu, and is produced in Gotsu, Oda and Hamada. Because the firing temperature is high, at 1200 degrees C or more, it is resistant to frost damage, and its share is high in the heavy snowfall areas on the Sea of Japan side, cold regions such as Hokkaido, and Hiroshima and Yamaguchi Prefectures close to the production area. In glazed tile, it accounts for about 20% of the national share.
