Overview
Winter paper is made in freezing water; the speed and angle of the shaking mould decide how even the sheet will be.
About this place
Inshu washi is washi that is a speciality of eastern Tottori Prefecture (the former Inaba Province). The production areas are the former Aoya Town and the former Saji Village (both now incorporated into Tottori), and in particular its output of gasen-shi (Inshu gasen-shi), the paper used for calligraphy, calligraphic painting and ink painting, accounts for 60 to 70 percent of the national total, the largest in Japan. In recent years it has also been used for many purposes such as building materials and craft materials. It was the first washi in Japan to be designated a Traditional Craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the scenery of papermaking in the production area was selected as one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan (Environment Agency).
