Overview
Japan's largest karst plateau: white limestone pillars scattered through grassland, with ten kilometres of cave beneath.
About this place
Akiyoshidai is Japan's largest karst plateau, spreading across the central and eastern parts of Mine, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It extends about 16 km northeast and about 6 km northwest, with a total area of 54 km2 on the plateau, a total area of 93 km2 of limestone distribution (including latent parts below the alluvial surface), and a plateau surface elevation of 180 to 420 m. It is divided into two plateaus, east and west (Higashidai and Nishidai), by the Togo River, and the eastern area is Akiyoshidai in the narrow sense (a Special Natural Monument and Quasi-National Park).
