About this place
Chofu is an area in the south of Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. There are many historical events: the stay of Emperor Chuai, the minting of Wado Kaichin coins, the fall of the Ouchi clan, the Shimonoseki bombardment by the Four-Nation fleet, and the uprising at Kozanji. Geographically it faces the sea to the east and south, and is now mostly residential. In this article Chofu means the area under the jurisdiction of the Chofu Branch Office of Shimonoseki City Hall. "Chofu" is a place name that continues to the present and was also called Fuchu, Fumachi and so on. As explained later in the ancient section, Chofu was the provincial capital of Nagato Province.
