Terraced limestone pools like rice paddies, built up by dripping water over hundreds of thousands of years.
About this place
Akiyoshido is a limestone cave 100 to 200 m below Akiyoshidai in the east of Mine, Yamaguchi Prefecture, open to the public along a tourist route of about 1 km. It is one of Japan's largest limestone caves. An underground river flows for about 1 km from Kotogafuchi at the back of the cave to the cave mouth. As a result of diving surveys by cave explorers around 1990 from Kotogafuchi inward, it was found to connect to Kuzugaana about 2.5 km to the east, bringing the total length to 8,850 m.
