A performing tradition that died out entirely and was reconstructed in the 1970s, costumes and all.
About this place
The Suo Monkey Performance Society is a monkey-performance group based in Hikari, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was formed on December 2, 1977. On August 26, 2004 (Heisei 16), it was designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Hikari. The art of monkey performance, said to have a history of several hundred years, was a traditional art of discriminated communities, so after the Meiji Restoration it vanished from all over Japan except for the monkey performance of Suo in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
