About this place
Yanai-jima is a traditional Japanese textile. It developed centered on Yanai, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Yanai-jima is a textile characterized by vertical stripe patterns using cotton thread. It developed centered on what is now Yanai, Yamaguchi Prefecture, by a method called "watagae," in which in the Edo period cotton merchants handed raw material to craftsmen, paid a weaving fee, and then took delivery of the product. Afterward, in 1760 (10th year of Horeki), the Iwakuni Domain began a textile inspection stamp system, its quality was recognized, and around the middle of the Edo period it became known throughout Japan as Yanai cotton.
