About this place
Kanzo Yashiki is a private house built in the late Edo period in Kamiozo, Enzan, Koshu, Yamanashi Prefecture, designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The designated name as an Important Cultural Property is the Former Takano Family Residence. The Takano family served as village elders (osabyakusho) in this area, took the name "Ihei" for generations, and at the end of the shogunate were permitted to bear a surname and sword as village heads (nanushi). Because the Takano family cultivated licorice (kanzo) for delivery to the Edo shogunate, it is called Kanzo Yashiki.
