About this place
Shosenkyo is a gorge in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, on the north side of the Kofu Basin in the upper reaches of the Arakawa River. It is designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and is one of Japan's leading scenic spots. It is counted as one of the "Five Great Gorges of Japan." It was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan in 1923 (Taisho 12) and a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in 1953 (Showa 28). The designated name as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty is Mitake Shosenkyo, but it is commonly written with the standard-form character for "take."
