About this place
Iyo Kasuri is an indigo cotton kasuri woven in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture. It is also called Matsuyama Kasuri. Together with Kurume Kasuri and Bingo Kasuri, it is regarded as one of Japan's three great kasuri. In the late Edo period, Kana Kagiya of Imazu (now around Nishigaobu, Matsuyama) wove it on her own. At that time, women and children in farming families spun it in the gaps between farm work to earn extra income. After the Meiji era began, looms improved, output grew and it became popular nationwide.
