About this place
Hakubotan Shuzo Co., Ltd. is a sake brewer with its head office in Saijo Honmachi, Higashihiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture. It was founded in 1675 (Enpo 3) in the Edo period. Hikotaro Tadamasa, second son of Shima Sakon Katsutake, a retainer of Ishida Mitsunari who lost at the Battle of Sekigahara, traveled west and stopped at Saijo in Aki Province, and his grandson Shima Rokubei Harumasa founded the brewery there. The sake name Hakubotan (white peony) comes from the family crest of the Takatsukasa family, one of the five regent houses of Kyoto. It has five breweries in operation, the Enpo Brewery and Tenpo Brewery in Saijo Honmachi and the Choshun, Mannen and Senju Breweries of the Yonemitsu Brewery, one of the largest in Hiroshima Prefecture.
