Overview
Uchiharano ware of Aki. A local kiln.
About this place
Uchiharano ware is pottery fired in Aki, Kochi Prefecture. Around 1829 (Bunsei 12), a kiln was first opened in Uchiharano, and it mainly fired daily items such as sake bottles and mortars. It is characterized by a warm, simple texture from glazes made from wood ash and straw ash. Until the early Showa period it made large pieces using a climbing kiln, but demand fell as lifestyles changed.
