About this place
Shinzato Shuzo Co., Ltd. is a sake (awamori) brewing company headquartered in Okinawa City, Okinawa Prefecture. It was founded in Koka 3 (1846) in Akata-cho, one of the Shuri Sanka where sake brewing was permitted in the Ryukyu Kingdom period. With a history of 171 years since its founding, it is the oldest of the existing Okinawan distilleries. The former president Shuichi Shinzato, the 6th generation, was also a researcher and in Heisei 1 (1989) developed the non-foaming yeast 'Awamori No. 101,' dramatically improving awamori productivity and contributing greatly to the industry. It is a regular distillery winning the Governor's Award at the awamori competition.
