About this place
Shizuhata ware is pottery fired in Shizuoka, Shizuoka Prefecture. Pottery making began in the early Edo period with Ota Shichirozaemon, who was given the title Shizuhata ware by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and it flourished as the official kiln of the Tokugawa family. But at the end of the Bunsei era a flood of the Abe River washed away the kiln site, and it declined steadily afterward. In the Meiji era Ota Manjiro tried to revive it, but it never regained its former vigor. In the middle of the Meiji era, however, the prefecture set out to revive local industries, and Aoshima Shosuke, who ran a ceramics business in Hachibancho, revived it.
