Overview
Moriyama ware of Mori Town. A local ceramic art.
About this place
Moriyama ware is pottery fired in Mori, Shuchi District, Shizuoka Prefecture. It follows the line of Shidoro ware. In 1902, Nakamura Hideyoshi read the story of Toshiro, a potter of Seto, in the magazine Taiyo, invited Suzuki Seison from Shidoro and began a pottery business. In 1909 the Moriyama ware kiln was opened. At first it fired drainpipes, water jars and the like, but later turned to small items such as tea utensils, vases, sake vessels and tableware. In 1915, when a vase and an ornament were presented in celebration of the accession of Emperor Taisho, a letter of thanks was given in acceptance.
