About this place
Yumihama kasuri is kasuri (ikat) made on the Yumigahama Peninsula in Tottori Prefecture (Yonago and Sakaiminato). It is named Yumihama after Yumigahama, the other name for the area. It is sometimes also simply called Hama kasuri. It is famous as a picture kasuri and, together with Kurayoshi kasuri and Hirose kasuri, is counted as one of the three picture kasuri of San'in. It was designated a national traditional craft in 1975 and an Intangible Cultural Property of Tottori Prefecture in 1978. From the Edo period into the Meiji period there were many weaving houses, and it was especially popular among the kasuri of the San'in region.
