About this place
Sakakura Shinbei is a name held by successive heads of the Sakakura Shinbei Kiln, a Hagi-ware kiln in Fukawa, Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture, passed down as the professional name of a ceramic artist. The current holder is the sixteenth Sakakura Shinbei, Masahiro. In the 9th year of Keicho (1604), the brothers Yi Chakkwang and Yi Kyong, potters from Joseon Korea who had been invited at the order of Mori Terumoto, set up an official kiln below Hagi Castle. The name Sakakura Shinbei goes back to the elder brother, Yi Chakkwang, as the first holder. From the sixth generation the family changed its surname to Sakakura.
