The tutelary shrine of a Tokaido post town. Its tahoto pagoda is an Important Cultural Property, a trace of the old fusion of Shinto and Buddhism.
About this place
Chiryu Shrine (read Chiryu Jinja or Chirifu Jinja) is a shrine in Nishimachi, Chiryu, Aichi Prefecture. It is a shrine listed in the Engishiki, the Second Shrine of Mikawa Province, and its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine. Its old name was "Chiryu Daimyojin." In the Edo period it was counted as one of the "Three Shrines of the Tokaido." The following six deities are enshrined: four main deities with two deities enshrined alongside. Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto - the chief deity. Hikohohodemi no Mikoto - the father of Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto. Tamayoribime no Mikoto - the wife of Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto.
