About this place
Saishoin is a Shingon sect (Chizan school) temple in Doyamachi, Hirosaki, Aomori. Its mountain name is Kongozan and its temple name is Komyoji. Its five-story pagoda, designated an Important Cultural Property, is the northernmost in Japan. In the district called Zenrin-gai and Shinteramachi, south of Hirosaki Castle in the center of Hirosaki, known for the Hirosaki Neputa Festival, 46 temples stand in a row. Saishoin is a representative temple among them, together with Chosho-ji, and is dear to the townspeople as "the temple of the five-story pagoda".
