About this place
Utou Shrine is a shrine in Yasukata, Aomori, Aomori. Its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine. It enshrines as its principal deities the three Munakata goddesses, Ichikishimahime no Mikoto, Tagitsuhime no Mikoto and Takiri-hime no Mikoto, known as deities of the sea and of safe voyages. Ukanomitama no Mikoto, Miyabi no Mikoto, Sarutahiko no Mikoto and Umitsumi no Okami are also enshrined as deities. It is said that the shrine began in the reign of Emperor Ingyo, when a man called Utou Chunagon Yasukata, who was confined in Sotogahama after falling into imperial disfavor, was moved by a vision of Takakura Myojin, built a small shrine on the tidal flat, and enshrined the three Munakata deities.
