About this place
Kudoji is a Shingon-sect Chizan-branch temple in Sakamoto, Hirosaki, Aomori. Its mountain name is Gokokusan and its subtemple name is Kannonin. Its rank is 15th grade. It is Temple No. 1 of the Tsugaru 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, and together with Saishoin, Hyakusawadera (now Kumonji), Kyounji and Kokujoji it is one of the Five Great Tsugaru Shingon Temples. The principal image is a Sho Kannon said to be the work of Ennin (Jikaku Daishi). It was originally a branch temple of Saishoin. It is also famous for the Oshira-ko (Daihakura-ko) confraternity and for the ghost painting, described below, said to be by Maruyama Okyo, 'Hangonko no Zu'.
