About this place
Tomisaki Shrine is a shrine in Hamakatsuura, Katsuura, Chiba (Isumi District, Kazusa Province). Its former shrine rank was village-district shrine (gosha). It enshrines Ame no Tomi no Mikoto, who opened up the Boso Peninsula. Ame no Tomi no Mikoto, who served as a close aide to Emperor Jimmu, after finishing the development of Awa, sought better land in the east, led the Awa Imbe clan and others on the Kuroshio current, and landed on Mera Beach at the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula. He built a shrine to his ancestral deity Ame no Futodama no Mikoto and pushed ahead with the development of Awa, and is said to have died there afterward.
