About this place
Warei Shrine is a shrine in Uwajima, Ehime Prefecture. Its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine. Kinyori was a retainer of Date Masamune, and when Masamune's eldest son Hidemune was transferred to Uwajima in 1615 (1st year of Genna), he followed and supported the domain's government as chief retainer of the Uwajima Domain. Uwajima had been exhausted by the misrule of previous lords, but Kinyori reduced taxes and promoted industry with good effect. However, in 1620 (6th year of Genna), the lord Hidemune believed slander by retainers who envied Kinyori, and Kinyori was killed together with his sons (the Warei incident).
