About this place
Onsen Shrine is a shrine related to hot springs, or one that enshrines hot springs. They are found across Japan, mainly in hot spring areas. Japan has volcanic belts running in all directions, and there are hot springs everywhere. Hot springs have been objects of reverence since ancient times as the deity of hot water (Yu no Kami) or the hot spring deity (Onsen no Kami). The shrines that enshrine this deity are Yu shrines and Onsen shrines. Many hot springs discovered in ancient times are said to have been discovered by Onamuchi no Kami (Okuninushi) and Sukunabikona no Kami, and these two deities are often assigned to the hot spring deity, the principal deity of Onsen Shrines.
