About this place
Nyohoji is a Shingon sect Buzan school temple in Koriyama, Fukushima. Its mountain name is Kogakuzan. It is said to have begun when Toramaru Choja, a man of influence in Koriyama, went up to the capital, received a statue of Batto Kannon from Emperor Heizei and returned home, built a Kannon hall in 807 (Daido 2), and invited the priest Sasakune Shonin to hold the eye-opening ceremony. The grounds contain many old stone monuments, and the stone kasa-toba and slab-stone toba bearing Kamakura-period inscriptions are designated Important Cultural Properties.
