About this place
Akagi Shrine is a shrine whose name contains "Akagi". It is a shrine in Gunma Prefecture that enshrines Mount Akagi. It is a shrine that enshrines Mount Akagi, which stands on the northwestern edge of the Kanto Plain, as its sacred mountain (shintaizan). It originates in mountain worship of the caldera lakes Onuma and Konuma on the summit, the crater cone Mount Jizo, and Mount Akagi itself. There are said to be about 300 Akagi shrines across the country, mainly in the Kanto region, and among them Miyosawa Akagi Shrine on the mountainside and Odo Akagi Shrine on the summit are especially regarded as the head shrines.
