The shrine stands as if afloat on the caldera lake at the summit of Mount Akagi.
About this place
Akagi Shrine is a name shared by shrines bearing "Akagi" in their name. This one, in Gunma Prefecture, enshrines Mount Akagi. It enshrines Mount Akagi, standing on the northwest edge of the Kanto Plain, as a sacred mountain body. It originates in mountain worship of the caldera lakes Onuma and Konuma at the summit, the volcanic cone Jizodake, and Mount Akagi itself. It is said there are about 300 Akagi shrines across the country, centered on the Kanto region, and among them Mitsuyazawa Akagi Shrine on the mountainside and Odo Akagi Shrine at the summit are regarded as the head shrines.
