About this place
Kosenji is a Shingon sect Buzan school temple in Kusatsu, Agatsuma District, Gunma. Its mountain name is Kusatsuyama. It is Temple No. 44 of the Kanto Yakushi pilgrimage. The Yakushi Hall was founded by Gyoki in 721. Kosenji itself is said to have been rebuilt in 1200 (Shoji 2) by the Yumoto clan, then rulers of Kusatsu, as the betto-ji (administrative temple) of Shirane Myojin. Its priests had been appointed jito by the Kamakura shogunate. In the conflicts of the Northern and Southern Courts it sided with the Southern Court and led warrior monks. Votive tablets by Prince Moriyoshi, Nitta Yoshisada, Kusunoki Masashige, Nawa Nagatoshi, Kitabatake Chikafusa and others have been dedicated.
