Overview

Southern Hokkaido was tied to Honshu early on by the kitamaebune trade and the herring fishery. The shrine's history follows that.

Origins and the move to Yachigashira

The official Hakodate City tourism site introduces the shrine's origin as 1445, when Kono Masamichi built a fortified residence and enshrined the deity Hachiman within it. In 1880 the shrine moved to its present site in Yachigashira. Reading about the history before the move, as well as the current location, reveals the link between faith and the changing townscape of Hakodate.

Festivals and the meaning of a visit

Hakodate Hachimangu is also known for its summer annual festival. It is a place of worship you can stop by when walking around Yachigashira, and visitors should bear in mind that the precinct is used by local worshippers, not just treat the event as a tourist attraction. Check the festival schedule, traffic restrictions and the areas where photography is allowed against that year's official notices.

About this place

Hakodate Hachiman Shrine (函館八幡宮, Hakodate Hachimangū) is a Shinto shrine located in Hakodate, Hokkaido. It is a Hachiman shrine, dedicated to the kami Hachiman. It is also a Sōja shrine that enshrines all the deities of its region, although it technically does not have a province. It was established in 1445. Its main festival is held annually on August 15. Kami enshrined here include Emperor Ōjin as Hondawake no mikoto (品陀和気命), Sumiyoshi no Okami (住吉大神), and Kotohira no Okami (金刀比羅大神). It was formerly a National Shrine of the Second Rank (国幣中社, kokuhei-chūsha) in the modern system of ranked Shinto Shrines.
