About this place
Saikokuji is a temple in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is a head temple of the Shingon sect, Daigo school. Its mountain name is Manisan and its sub-temple name is Sojiin. The principal image is a seated Yakushi Rurikou Nyorai (National Important Cultural Property), which is a hidden image. It is a special sacred site of the Chugoku Thirty-three Kannon Pilgrimage, Temple No. 16 of the Chugoku Forty-nine Yakushi Pilgrimage, Temple No. 19 of the Twenty-four Flower Temples of Sanyo, and Temple No. 6 of the Bingo Thirty-three Kannon Pilgrimage. According to the temple's records, it was built in the Tenpyo era (729-749) of the Nara period, after Gyoki, while travelling through the provinces, saw a divine dream of Kamo Myojin at this place.
