About this place
Senjokaku is a shrine building on Itsukushima (Miyajima) in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, and is the popular name of the main hall of Toyokuni Shrine, an auxiliary shrine of Itsukushima Shrine (read either Toyokuni Jinja or Hokoku Jinja). It came to be called "Senjokaku" (Hall of a Thousand Mats) because it has the floor area of 857 tatami mats. It is a large sutra hall with a hip-and-gable roof of main tiles, which Toyotomi Hideyoshi vowed to build in 1587 (15th year of Tensho) for the recitation of a thousand sutras and ordered Ankokuji Ekei to construct. After Hideyoshi's death, it has remained to the present without completion of the ceiling boards and the exterior structures.
