About this place
Abashiri Shrine is a shrine in Abashiri, Hokkaido. Its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine. It is the ichinomiya of Kitami Province. It enshrines the three deities Ichikishimahime no Mikoto, Tagorihime no Mikoto and Tagitsuhime no Mikoto (the three Munakata goddesses), and is popularly called Benten-sama. Amaterasu Omikami is also enshrined as an associated deity. It is said to have begun in 1812 (Bunka 9), when Fujino Shirobei, a native of Omi, built a small shrine to Benzaiten at the mouth of the Abashiri River and made it the guardian of the fishing grounds. In the Meiji period, people who had settled in Abashiri formed a village, asked the Fujino family for the Benzaiten shrine, and made it the guardian shrine and tutelary shrine of the area.
