About this place
Hokkaido Jingu Tongu is a shrine located in Minami 2-jo Higashi 3-chome, Chuo Ward, Sapporo, Hokkaido. It is an auxiliary shrine of Hokkaido Jingu located outside its grounds, and 'tongu' means 'temporary shrine'. It has served as the 'otabisho' (resting place) where the portable shrines paraded through the city rest during the Hokkaido Jingu annual festival in mid-June. It also functions as a local landmark, and there was once a 'Tongu-mae' stop on the Sapporo Streetcar Ichijo Line. The Izumo-style guardian dogs in the precinct, made of Sapporo soft stone, are the oldest in Sapporo.
