About this place
Sumadera is a head temple of the Shingon sect Sumadera school in Sumaderacho, Suma Ward, Kobe, Hyogo. Its mountain name is Joyasan. The principal image is Sho Kannon. It is Temple No. 24 of the New Saigoku Thirty-Three pilgrimage. Its formal name is Fukushoji. According to the "Sumadera Ryakureki Engi" handed down at the temple, in the early Heian period a fisherman pulled a statue of Sho Kannon from the sea off Wada Cape. To enshrine that Sho Kannon statue, Egeisan Hokuhoji was built by imperial order of Emperor Junna.
