About this place
Kanazawa Shrine is a shrine in Kanazawa, Ishikawa. Its principal deity is Sugawara no Michizane. It is one of the shrines enshrining domain founders that became popular from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period. It is also written with an alternative form of the characters. It adjoins Kenrokuen. It began in 1794 (Kansei 6), when Maeda Harunaga, the 11th lord of the Kaga Domain, built the domain school Meirindo and founded a shrine as its guardian shrine, enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning who is also regarded as an ancestor of the Maeda family.
