Overview
It stands on the site of the Ataka barrier, known as the setting of the Kanjincho tale of Yoshitsune and Benkei, and draws prayers for getting through a hard test.
About this place
Atakasumiyoshi Shrine is a shrine on the Sea of Japan coast in Atakamachi, Komatsu, Ishikawa. The Ataka Barrier site lies on the grounds, and from the legends featured in "Ataka" and "Kanjincho" it is known as a deity for breaking through difficulties. Principal deities: the three Sumiyoshi deities (Sokotsutsu no O no Mikoto, Nakatsutsu no O no Mikoto, Uwatsutsu no O no Mikoto) It stands on the south bank at the mouth of the Kakehashi River, with a sandy beach and the Sea of Japan spreading to the north. According to legend, Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Musashibo Benkei, fleeing to Hiraizumi in Oshu, escaped trouble here despite being suspected by the barrier guard Togashi Yasuie, and so the shrine is regarded as especially efficacious for breaking through difficulties.
