About this place
Yakehashiri Lava Flow is a rocky field in Hachimantai, Iwate, formed by a lava flow that issued from the flank of Mount Iwate. It is designated a Special Natural Monument of Japan. The name is said to come from the people of the time who saw the red-hot lava flow rush down the mountain slope at great speed and called it "yakehashiri" (burning run); locally it has been called "Yakehashiri" since ancient times.
