It was known for the Somin Festival at the lunar new year, a wild all-night contest between naked men that ended after 2024.
About this place
Kokusekiji is a Tendai sect temple in Yamanouchi, Kokuseki-cho, Mizusawa, Oshu, Iwate (formerly Kokuseki Village, Esashi District). It is often read "Kuroishi-dera". Its mountain name is Myokenzan. The principal image is a seated Yakushi Nyorai. It is known for the wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai, an Important Cultural Property and an inscribed statue from the early Heian period, and for the Kokusekiji Sominsai, a Selected Intangible Folk Cultural Property. It is said to have been opened by Gyoki in 729 (Tenpyo 1) as the first temple in the Tohoku region.
