About this place
Tendaiji is a Tendai-sect temple in Joboji-cho, Ninohe, Iwate. Its mountain name is Hachiyozan. In 1976 Kon Shunchoh (the writer Kon Toko), who had been chief priest of Chusonji, took up the post as a specially appointed head priest and set out on the temple's restoration, conceiving the new construction of the principal image, an eleven-faced Kannon standing statue (one jo six shaku tall). Two years after his appointment, however, he fell to his long-standing colon cancer and passed away. Later, in 1987, Setouchi Jakucho succeeded him as head priest (now honorary head priest) and is known for having fulfilled the responsibility of the temple's restoration.
