About this place
Jokenji is a Soto sect temple in Tono, Iwate. Its mountain name is Renpozan. It adjoins Kappabuchi, and there is a legend that a kappa living there put out a fire at Jokenji and became a guardian dog (komainu). It is said to have been founded in April of Entoku 2 (1490) in the Muromachi period, with Tamon Hidemori as founding priest. It is the head temple (furegashira) of the twelve temples of Tono-go. Main Hall - Enshrines a wooden statue of Obinzuru-sama. Mountain Gate - An eight-legged gate (hakkyakumon).
