The funerary temple of the Sato family, and known as a temple Basho visited on the Narrow Road to the Deep North.

About this place

Ioji is a Shingon sect temple in Fukushima, Fukushima. Its mountain name is Rurikozan. It is the family temple of the Sato clan, who ruled Shinobu District in the early medieval period. Regarding its founding, according to the Dai Nihon Chimei Jisho, whose first edition was published in the Meiji era, the details are unknown, but according to the temple's history it was opened by Kukai in 826. Afterward, it was restored by Sato Mototsugu in the Jisho era, and it is recorded that Kaio of Fukushima Shinjoin "restored it" in the Kan'ei era.
