About this place
Kessanji is a temple of the Rinzai school, Myoshinji branch, in Minamimachi, Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture. Its mountain name is Joeizan. The principal image is a standing statue of Nenge Shakyo Nyorai. It is the family temple of the Katakura clan, founded by Katakura Kagetsuna, lord of Shiroishi Castle. In March of the 13th year of Keicho (1608), Katakura Kagetsuna founded it as the Katakura family temple. According to the temple's history, Kagetsuna is the founder (kaiki) and Tenshin Chikan the first abbot (kaizan). Kagetsuna and the second head of the family, Katakura Shigenaga, are buried at this temple.
