About this place
Tsumakirishima Shrine is a shrine in Higashi-Kirishima, Miyakonojo, Miyazaki Prefecture. It is a candidate for a shrine listed in the Engishiki, and its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine. It stands north of Miyakonojo, north-west of JR Higashi-Takasaki Station. It is said to have been founded in the reign of the 5th emperor, Emperor Kosho. The shrine buildings had been burned or buried by mountain eruptions and had fallen into ruin, but in 963 (Owa 3) the Tendai priest Shoku restored the buildings, and in the Edo period it came to be called Higashi-Kirishima Daigongen Miya.
