About this place
Takachiho Gorge is a gorge on the Gokase River in Mitai, Takachiho-cho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture. Located 25 km southeast of Mt. Aso, it is a deep valley with well-developed columnar joints, with cliffs averaging 80 m in height and reaching 100 m at the highest points, continuing for 7 km east to west. It is a V-shaped gorge formed when lava deposited by the eruptions (pyroclastic flows) of Mt. Aso cooled rapidly and was then eroded by the Gokase River.
