Overview
One hundred and twenty-three torii run about 100 metres out towards the sea. A comparatively new shrine, built after a white fox appeared in the dream of a local fisherman. The torii went on being dedicated over more than a decade. The same structure as the thousand torii at Fushimi Inari or the lanterns at Kasuga Taisha, still working in postwar Japan.
About this place
Motonosumi Shrine is a shrine in Tsuo, Yuyacho, Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Its former name was Motonosumi Inari Shrine. It is not a religious corporation or any other kind of corporation but is privately owned. For this reason it does not belong to the Association of Shinto Shrines or the Yamaguchi Prefectural Shrine Agency. In 1955 (Showa 30), a white fox appeared at the bedside of Okamura Hitoshi, a local fishing-boat owner, and gave the oracle 'Enshrine me in this place', and the shrine was built as Motonosumi Inari Shrine.
