About this place
Himosashi Church is a Catholic church in Hirado, Nagasaki Prefecture. It is said to have been the largest church building in Japan until the former Urakami Cathedral in Nagasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture, which was destroyed in the atomic bombing, was rebuilt. Located almost in the centre of Hirado Island, it is the church with jurisdiction over the central and southern part of the island and has many members. Many of the believers in the Himosashi district are not hidden Christians but Buddhists who were baptised in the early Meiji period.
